Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few questions we know you like to ask
How do I know if I have depression?
With depression you usually feel as if you really don’t want to do anything at all. It’s not just a ‘low’ feeling, but usually carries with it tearfulness or feelings of despair, as if life will never get any better. In most cases it can helped by the right therapy and usually a lot faster than you might think.
Is BWRT guaranteed to cure my depression?
Unfortunately, there’s not a therapy or a medicine in the world that can be guaranteed to be successful every time. But BWRT has often produced good results where others have failed.
Do you use psychedelics such as psilocybin?
No, there are no chemical or narcotic substances of any sort used in BWRT – it is a purely psychological process that uses the same brain functions that created the problem to release it.
Do you use electric shock treatment?
Not ever! Although ECT (Electoconvulsive Therapy) has been employed in the past for depression, it is rarely used these days. Not only that, but BWRT has never relied on anything other than psychological processes to resolve problems.
Do you prescribe medication?
No, we don’t. BWRT is not a medical procedure and though some of our practitioners are physicians, there are never any drugs or medicine as part of the BWRT process.
Will I have to force myself to do stuff?
That method is called an ‘Act of Will’ and it is not part of BWRT, though it might be the case that the practitioner will encourage you to think about something you would LIKE to do, which is quite different of course.
How many sessions will it take?
The length of psychological therapy is not easy to forecast as there are so many variables to take into account. For some people though, it can be as few as four sessions – and it will seldom be as many as eight.
What happens if it comes back?
A recurrence is actually very rare with BWRT, though it does sometimes happen, and the practitioner will know exactly how to find out why and how to sort it out.
Are there any unpleasant side effects?
There are no lasting unwanted side effects. Some people feel slightly ‘disconnected’ for a few seconds – no longer – as the brain lets go of the problem at the end of a session. And there may sometimes be a feeling of tiredness for a short while after the load on the mind is released.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No, you don’t need a referrral but the BWRT practitioner will need to be certain that you have consulted with a doctor or consultant. All responsible therapists will insist on this, in case there’s a medical cause at the root of it. It can even be caused by a simple vitamin deficiency, which needs proper investigation, of course.
Does it work properly with online therapy?
Yes! BWRT works every bit as well online, or even on the phone, as it does in a face-to-face setting. This means that you don’t have to travel if you would prefer not to.
Is there a long waiting list?
Many of our practitioners are very busy but mostly they’ll be able to fit you in for your sessions without having to wait more than a week or two.
How much does a session cost?
That’s a difficult one to answer, since there is no set fee and all practitioners run their own practice. It also depends on geographical area, and so the cost of a session will vary from about GBP 50.00 upwards. It’s also possible that advanced practitioners might charge a higher fee.
How can I find a BWRT Practitioner straight away?
Go to our professional therapists site and select ‘Depression’ from the ‘By difficulty’ dropdown list at the top of the form. That will bring up a list of practitioners who have completed the specialised course on working with depression.
If what you want to know is not listed here, head over to our ‘Contact us’ page to send us a message and we’ll get back to you with an answer very soon, usually within twenty-four hours.
